A typical Melbourne laundry runs $5,000–$15,000 in cabinetry depending on whether you go flatpack, semi-custom or bespoke. Apartment-scale laundries (4–6m²) can sit in the $2,000–$5,000 flatpack range; larger family laundries with mudroom, pet-wash or drying systems run $10,000–$25,000. The design starts from your washer and dryer — they’re the dominant constraint — and everything is built HMR-rated, like our bathrooms.

Designing around your appliances

Your washing machine and dryer drive the design

Unlike kitchens, laundry design works backwards from the appliances. The washer and dryer determine cavity sizes, ventilation paths, plumbing positions and whether stacked or side-by-side makes sense. Bring the model numbers to your consultation and we’ll design around the real dimensions. Three decisions shape everything else.

Front-loader vs top-loader

Front-loaders (595–600mm wide, 850mm high) stack and sit flush under a continuous benchtop — ideal for apartments and small terraces. Top-loaders (600–680mm wide, 1000–1100mm high) can’t stack and can’t take an overhead cabinet directly above. If you want a benchtop over your appliances, you almost certainly want front-loaders.

Stacked vs side-by-side

Stacking saves about 600mm of floor width (needs a front-loader pair, a stacking kit and 1700–1800mm ceiling clearance). Side-by-side needs 1200–1300mm but gives you a full-width benchtop above the appliances — which becomes a folding station and clean working surface. Tight on width: stack. Want bench space: side-by-side.

Dryer ventilation

This decides whether the dryer can be hidden. Vented dryers exhaust outside via a duct and can’t be fully enclosed; condenser dryers capture moisture in a tank but humidify the room; heat-pump dryers condense moisture internally and can be fully concealed behind doors. If hiding the dryer matters to you, a heat-pump model is the sensible choice.

Building for the wettest, hottest, hardest-working room

Laundries see more sustained moisture than any room except the bathroom — wet clothes, dripping coats, mop buckets, the dryer’s internal humidity — plus more heat than any other room, from the dryer and iron. Cabinetry built to kitchen-grade specs fails visibly in 5–8 years; built right, it lasts 15–20+.

Carcass construction

Every Inline laundry carcass is built from high moisture resistance (HMR) board with edge banding on every cut edge — the same specification we use in bathrooms. Standard kitchen-grade MR board is rated for splash exposure, not the sustained humidity a laundry sees beside a dryer. We use 16mm board for structural and back panels, with a marine-grade ply base-panel upgrade for heavily-used trough cabinets.

Laminate is the most practical choice for a laundry — it wipes clean and handles humidity without complaint. 2-pac gives a premium look where ventilation is good; keep vinyl wrap away from the dryer, where heat and steam lift its edges over time.

Hardware

Same standard as our other rooms — Blum soft-close hinges and runners with a manufacturer’s lifetime warranty. We add laundry-specific items: stainless steel trough fittings from approved Australian suppliers, and pull-out drying-rack hardware that fits inside a 600mm cabinet for hidden drip-dry storage.

How a laundry comes together at Inline

A laundry runs on a much shorter timeline than a kitchen — typically 4–6 weeks from check measure to handover, with 3–4 weeks of manufacture and a 2–3 day install. Here’s how it goes.

Consultation 30–45 minutes, free

Showroom or in-home. Bring your room dimensions, appliance model numbers and any multi-purpose requirements (mudroom, pet wash, drying). We scope the project and indicate a budget range.

Design & 3D render 1–2 weeks

Our in-house design team produces detailed plans and a full 3D render around your real appliance dimensions. Iterative until you’re confident.

Contract & check measure 1 week

A Victorian standard major domestic building contract for projects over $10,000, with a 5% deposit cap protected under Victorian law. Final measurements taken on-site.

Cabinet manufacture 3–4 weeks

Every cabinet built specifically for your laundry at our Bayswater workshop, HMR-rated throughout — with no disruption to your home. (Flatpack: days to 2 weeks.)

Installation & handover 2–3 days on-site

Cabinetry install, plus stone benchtop templating and installation if applicable, then trough and appliance fit-off coordinated with your plumber, and a final walkthrough.

Semi-custom or bespoke is the better call for non-standard layouts (under-stair, attic, ensuite-laundry), multi-purpose features (mudroom, pet wash) or a coordinated whole-home design. Yes — it’s how we start every laundry. Bring the model numbers (or planned models) and we’ll model the cabinetry around the actual appliance dimensions, including ventilation clearances for the dryer and access for the washer. Stacked, side-by-side and concealed-behind-doors approaches all work; they just need planning around your specific appliances.

We coordinate with your plumber but don’t do plumbing work directly. Laundry plumbing (water supply, waste for the trough and washer, dryer venting) needs a licensed plumber under Victorian Building Authority requirements. We design the cabinetry to suit your planned layout and give your plumber the exact dimensions and positions they need.

Often, yes — compact laundries are some of our favourite projects. Stacked front-loader configurations fit in spaces as narrow as 700mm; a full laundry zone (trough, washer, dryer, overhead storage) fits in 2.0–2.5m of wall length. Garage and cupboard laundries are common in older Melbourne homes — bring the dimensions and we’ll tell you what’s realistic.

Manufacture takes 3–4 weeks for semi-custom or bespoke, and days to 2 weeks for flatpack. On-site is usually 2–3 days for the cabinetry, plus 5–10 working days for a stone benchtop if applicable. Total from contract to handover is typically 4–6 weeks for a custom laundry, less for flatpack.
